Local Law Enforcement Named "DWI Enforcer All-Stars"

(ABC 6 NEWS) -- The Minnesota Department of Public Safety is announcing the state's top DWI enforcers before Thursday night's Minnesota Twins game at Target Field.

The 2011 DWI Enforcer All-Stars include 20 law enforcement officers and two prosecutors from the Twin Cities and greater Minnesota, including three local officers.

David Doppelhammer, Albert Lea police, David Williams, Olmsted Co. Sheriff and Jean Valere, Rochester Police all made this year's list.  They each have 55, 38 and 39 DWI arrests respectively in 2010.

Minnesota State Trooper Jack Tiegs is the state's Most Valuable Enforcer, leading the pack with 139 DWI arrests in 2009.  Tiegs also was leading enforcer in 2010, with 133 arrests.

"Drunk and impaired driving continues to kill and injure hundreds of people on Minnesota roads each year," said Donna Berger, acting director of DPS Office of Traffic Safety.  "The work of these law enforcement officers has prevented countless tragedies."

This is the fourth year DPS has recognized the state's top DWI enforcers.

Every year in Minnesota, alcohol-related crashes account for more than one third of the state's total traffic deaths.  Last year, 131 people were killed in alcohol-related crashes.  That's the lowest since 1984.
