Refrigerator & Freezer Recycling Program Starts May 15th

Refrigerator & Freezer Recycling Program Starts May 15th

The Conserve & Save program, serving Austin Utilities, Owatonna Public Utilities and Rochester Public Utilities, is back for a second year. The program allows people looking for new refrigerators and/or freezers to turn in operating but energy inefficient units for a $35 incentive. The incentive is good for each qualifying appliance, with a maximum of two units per program life.

This is the 2nd year for the program, which generated an incredible response in 2011. The 2012 program starts today, May 15th, and runs through October 31, 2012 or until funds are exhausted.

In order to qualify, the refrigerator or freezer must be 10-30 cubic feet, operating secondary unit, in working order and owned by an RPU customer. The appliance will also be picked up, free of charge, inside the customer's home from the address listed on their billing account.

You can get more information by calling 1-877-341-2259 or at www.rpu.org

Spring Cleaning Recommendations

Spring Cleaning Recommendations

As spring draws near, many homeowners begin the process of spring cleaning, which often includes getting their drains cleaned.  Drain cleaning rids your home of unwanted odors, and helps avoid clogged sinks, overflowing toilets, and laundry room floods. The Better Business Bureau of Minnesota and North Dakota (BBB) advises consumers to prepare themselves and do preliminary research before hiring someone to clean their drains this spring. Consumers should be aware that not all drain cleaners are licensed plumbers. However, many plumbers do perform drain cleaning services.

Once Upon a Playhouse

Once Upon a Playhouse

If you're heading to the Rochester Area Builders Home Show this year, make sure you stop by "Once Upon a Playhouse."

Family Service Rochester is once again raffling off four custom built playhouses. They all have two stories and are finished both inside and out. But each one has its own theme.

"People who have young kids know they want to get down here. They know they want to see them. They know their kids want to see them. But I would tell other people, if you didn't have kids, you still want to check this out because I guarantee you were a kid once and it brings you back to this happy place in childhood where you just think about, oh that would be so much fun!" says Brenda Walker.

Last year the event raised $40,000, all of which went to Family Service Rochester's domestic violence programs.

Keep Snow and Ice off Meters and Vents

Keep Snow and Ice off Meters and Vents

Information from Alliant Energy:

With the forecasted large snowfall and drifting snow over the next few days, Alliant Energy reminds customers not to forget about clearing snow and ice from their gas meter as well as their furnace vents and other vents around their home.

It’s important to remember heavy snow accumulation can cover natural gas meters as well as other vents around your home. Natural gas meters have regulators and a vent to allow gas to escape. If the vent is blocked, your gas system could malfunction.

Customers should also be aware of the dangers and risks of carbon monoxide (CO). The risk of illness or death from carbon monoxide increases in the winter. Every home should have at least one working CO monitor in the home.

Keep Your Holidays Warm, Bright, and Fire Safe

Keep Your Holidays Warm, Bright, and Fire Safe

Information from the Minnesota Department of Public Safety:

The Minnesota Department of Public Safety State Fire Marshal Division reminds Minnesotans to celebrate safely this holiday season, keeping in mind the added fire risks our holiday traditions bring with them.

The period between Christmas Eve and New Year’s Day typically includes more fire fatalities than any other week of the year. On average, 121 structure fires occur each week in Minnesota; during the week of Christmas that number spikes to 189. These patterns are due primarily to additional cooking and increased use of candles, fireplaces and electric lights.

Fortunately, awareness and caution can keep the festivities from destroying our homes and holidays, says State Fire Marshal Jerry Rosendahl. “Personal responsibility is the key to fire safety.  We must look for potential threats and proactively prevent trouble.
